The Church of St. Giles

The Church of St. Giles, situated in the heart of old Prague, is one of the architectural gems and spiritual centers of the Czech capital. This Gothic church, located in the Old Town quarter, has a rich history dating back to the 14th century. It was consecrated on May 4, 1371, in the presence of King Charles IV, his wife Elizabeth of Pomerania, and their son Wenceslaus IV. Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous changes and reconstructions, reflecting various historical and artistic influences. It underwent significant renovation during the Baroque period under the direction of the renowned architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, who gave it its current form. The interior of the church contains a number of artworks, including several altars, statues, and wall paintings by one of the most significant Czech painters of the High Baroque, Václav Vavřinec Reiner, serving as evidence of the rich history of this place. Due to its unique acoustics, the church is also a venue for frequent classical music concerts. In the early 1980s, director Miloš Forman filmed some scenes of his Oscar-winning film Amadeus in this church.
